### AI overview

The article argues that pedagogy remains a serious problem in advanced mathematics. It focuses on graduate-level textbooks whose proofs are often presented as high-level outlines, leaving students and even professional mathematicians to reconstruct omitted intermediate steps. It advocates explanations that are correct, complete, and accessible to reasonably motivated students.

### Source excerpt

It is a commonly held opinion that educational institutions could do more to improve the pedagogy of mathematics. This is especially applicable to primary and secondary schools, where students are first exposed to mathematics as a formal subject, along with other new subjects. Poor exposition can turn students away from mathematics for a lifetime. Only the highly motivated ones continue to engage with the subject. This is very unfortunate because mathematics is a beautiful subject and it is filled with wonder. It also teaches rigour in reasoning, clarity of thought and the discipline of constructing arguments from first principles to obtain intricate and often beautiful results. What is perhaps less known is that pedagogy is a problem even for graduate-level mathematics students and professional mathematicians. The proofs in many graduate-level mathematics textbooks are, in my humble opinion, not really proofs at all. They are closer to high-level outlines of proofs. The authors simply do not show their work. The student then has to put in an extraordinary amount of effort to understand and justify each line. Sometimes a 10-line argument in a textbook might expand into a 10-page proof if the student really wants to convince themselves that the argument works. I am not a mathematician, but out of personal interest, I have worked with professional mathematicians in the past to help refine notes that explain certain intermediate steps in textbooks (for example, Galois Theory by Stewart, in a specific case). I was surprised to find that it was not just me who found the intermediate steps of certain proofs obscure. Even professional mathematicians who had studied the subject for much of their lives found them obscure. It took us two days of working together to untangle a complicated argument and present it in a way that satisfied three properties: correctness, completeness and accessibility to a reasonably motivated student. There is a reason why jokes like 'proof by obv

### Source excerpt

Recently I was doing some work decoding the new Galileo High Accuracy Service data. In short, this new service will allow Galileo ("European GPS") users to achieve decimeter-level accuracy, which is nice. This "HAS" data is transmitted highly redundantly by making good use of Reed-Solomon encoding. To work with this data, I attempted to learn more about Reed-Solomon and I found almost all explanations were useless to me - oodles of advanced math, but no guidance of how to use R-S in practice.

### AI overview

This tutorial explains why Vuex method-style getter invocations do not cache their returned values, distinguishes that behavior from property-style getter caching, and discusses how to implement result caching when performance measurements justify it. It also relates the approach to Vue's Advanced Reactivity API and method-style computed properties.

### Source excerpt

We're going to talk about a common request when working with relational data in Vuex. Why and how to cache method-style getter invocations, though the principles would also apply to method-style computed properties. If you have been following recent Vue v3 RFCs, you might have come across the Advanced Reactivity API, which comes as a very welcome direction for Vue to take. This article is written using Vue v2, but ultimately the code will be simplified if this RFC is implemented. Firstly, although both property-style and method-style getters offer caching as part of core Vuex functionality, method-style getter invocations do not cache results. If that doesn't make much sense, keep reading, it should become clear. What is a Method-style Getter? Below is the example from the Vuex documentation of a method-style getter, sometimes referred to as a parameterized getter. getTodoById: (state) => (id) => { return state.todos.find(todo => todo.id === id) } Normally a getter works by processing state into a given result. todoCount: (state) => state.todos.length, This will mean that store.getters.todoCount might provide the value 12, which will be cached in the event that the value is accessed again without any underlying reactive data changing. isTodoOpen: (state) => (id) => !!state.todos[id].assignee && state.todos[id].status !== 'complete', The above example can be accessed by store.getters.isTodoOpen(123) which will return a boolean. This value is not cached, calling it repeatedly will result in multiple executions. So what is cached here? Nothing from a reactive standpoint. When the getter property is accessed on the store, store.getters.isTodoOpen, just prior to invocation, this will run the outer function which will not access any reactive data, but create a function, an arrow which accepts id. This created function is now cached. Why aren't the results of these getters cached? There are lots of good reasons not to cache the results of these functions. How many times wo

A tutorial on processing Magic: the Gathering card data stored in JSON with PostgreSQL. It covers loading the data, normalizing a JSON document into a database schema, querying JSON data with a GIN index, and comparing processing against the JSON and normalized schemas.

### Source excerpt

PostgreSQL has had proper json support for a while now. The unique extensibility approach of the PostgreSQL system allows it to enable native SQL friendly JSON processing. In this article we'll play with the Magic: the Gathering card data in JSON format data set, provided with a CC0 licence, and process the information provided. We also see how to normalize a JSON document into a proper database model that benefits from some PostgreSQL advanced features, and how to then inject the JSON documents into the normalized database schema. Finally, we compare some non-trivial processing done against both versions of the database schema.

### AI overview

A tutorial on indexing complex tag combinations for Last.fm tracks in PostgreSQL. It migrates a SQLite dataset with pgloader and uses PostgreSQL arrays and the intarray extension to represent each track's tag IDs for querying.

### Source excerpt

In our Tour of Extensions today's article is about advanced tag indexing. We have a great data collection to play with and our goal today is to be able to quickly find data matching a complex set of tags. So, let's find out those lastfm tracks that are tagged as blues and rhythm and blues, for instance. We're going to use the Last.fm dataset from the Million Song Dataset project here. The article where they present their similarity searches is providing the whole dataset they have as a SQLite database and they propose to read their python script demo_tags_db.py to make sense of it.

A personal report from the CHAR(13) conference, held alongside PGDAY UK, describing a presentation on advanced distributed architectures using Streaming Replication, Skytools, and PLproxy. The article emphasizes that replication is a tool rather than an end in itself.

### Source excerpt

Last week was held the CHAR(13) conference in a great venue in the UK countryside. Not only did we discover UK under good weather conditions and some local beers, we also did share a lot of good ideas! *The Hordwood House is quite of a maze really!* The conference was run side to side with PGDAY UK, and those two days were packed with great conferences! I had the pleasure to present a talk about Advanced Distributed Architectures where some examples of architectures using Streaming Replication, Skytools and PLproxy are shown.

Touchlab proposes organizing an advanced Android developer boot camp and asks the community for feedback on topics that serious Android developers should know.

### Source excerpt

We've been throwing around the idea a "boot camp" for advanced Android for a while now. Its been slowly brewing, but its time to pull it together. We're making a list of topics that a serious Android developer should be familiar with, but would like some feedback from the community. What have you learned that you think a serious developer should know?
