### AI overview

The article explains how Instacart applies Domain Adaptive Learning to Carrot Ads to address the cold-start problem for new retail partner websites. It describes transferring knowledge from Instacart Marketplace data to target domains to improve click-through-rate prediction and ad ranking with limited partner-specific interaction data.

### Source excerpt

Authors: Trey Zhong, Xiyu Wang Contributors: Joseph Haraldson, Sharad Gupta, Sarah Lamacchia Introduction Carrot Ads is Instacart's omnichannel retail media solution that allows retailer partners to build and scale their own advertising businesses on either their owned-and-operated (O&O) websites and apps or their whitelabel Storefront hosted by Instacart. Carrot Ads empowers retailers and CPG brands to accelerate revenue, while improving the customer experience, engagement and Ads return on investment. It features enterprise-grade infrastructure, AI-powered optimization, years of proprietary first-party data and flexibility to choose from retailer-sourced Ads demand, Instacart-sourced demand from 7,500+ CPG brands, or both. However, onboarding a new partner onto Carrot Ads introduces a key challenge: the 'cold start' problem, where limited historical interactions make it difficult to predict user behavior accurately. To serve performant ads, our systems rely on predicting a user's Click-Through Rate (CTR) to generate a ranking score. On the Instacart Marketplace, we have billions of historical signals to train a model to do so. But when a partner launches a new ads experience on their O&O e-commerce site, there is often little to no interaction history for that property, so training an accurate model becomes challenging. User behavior can vary dramatically between websites -- for example, browsing patterns on a grocery site differ from those on a pet supply or electronics site. Training a model from scratch for a new domain is data hungry. Conversely, directly deploying Instacart's existing Marketplace model often fails to capture the nuances of the partner's specific inventory and user base. To address this, we developed a Domain Adaptive Learning approach that transfers knowledge from Instacart's data-rich environment to new partner environments. By treating the Instacart Marketplace as a source domain and the partner's website as a target domain, we can transfer

I used to love Google. Now I don't. I used to enjoy search for new information and explore some new topic in Google. Now I don't. I'm on the verge of switching to another search engine. Yesterday I dug into remote work. I searched for various info, primarily I wanted to find exact remote companies practices from real practitioners. This is a typical screen in Google for any relatively generic search request. Screen 1. Ads On the first screen I see only ads and some glimpse of hope in the footer. I have to scroll down. Screen 2. SEO-optimized bullshit No hope. All these articles are not good enough. All are generic, and I have a feeling most of them were written by people with zero experience in remote work. I got very little interesting info from them. I have to scroll down. Screen 3. More SEO-optimized crap More SEO-optimized articles, maybe HBR was relatively OK. I have to scroll down. Screen 4. More Ads Final screen has more ads. Is it me? Maybe in some poor country with GDP < 1K per person I will see less ads? Not sure there is VPN for South Sudan... Next page... It appeared to be very hard to find good resources about remote work. Google is filled with generic, non-concrete, SEO-oriented bullshit. I had to dig this piece of crap for an hour to find some rare gems. Most gems I found on HN. My rant is over. Hug me, please. P.S. HN discussion thread

### AI overview

This installment discusses online advertising for startups, focusing on search advertising through Google AdWords. It recommends selective keyword targeting, using competitor and related-product terms, and measuring conversions by linking Google AdWords with Google Analytics.

### Source excerpt

For this third part on the series I'm going to dive into what people perhaps most traditionally think of with marketing startups, online advertising. Online advertising can work, but its definitely not cheap and it does take a good about of pounding at it to know what works. I'm going to break up the three key types of advertising, based on the way I've utilized them and evaluated them recently. Contextual The first is search advertising, or contextual. The biggest usage of this has of course most recently been with google AdWords. For the complete novices out there, this is where you're ad would appear as text based on certain search keywords. You're the one that is able to determine the keywords, though google does rank you for relevance and how much you are willing to pay respective of the other person bidding on the same keywords. For a startup I'd very strongly discourage advertising for keywords you already appear as the first result. A part of this goes back to part one of the series, SEO doesn't cost you anything other than time, so invest in it. If you're already at the top of the results, why potentially pay $2 for a click, when you're already there. With limited budget you want to be very selective about which keywords you target. In our experiences the best targetting can be with regards to your competitors or similar products. Also take advantage of google's tools here. There are many tools within adwords that will suggest new keywords, rank your relevance, and show traffic to certain keywords. Always remember, what you really want is conversion, so make sure that's what you're tracking against performance. The key to doing this is linking your Google AdWords account to your Google Analytics. Google mentions in several places you should do this, but is very light on the instructions of how. So for a really quick how to: We followed a rather structured process to identify what worked. If there's enough interest in this specifically I'll do a full follow

### AI overview

The article argues that layoffs are occurring alongside continued demand for some job skills, but questions the returns available in crowded Facebook app and iPhone app markets. It also argues that unusually high mobile advertising rates are unlikely to be sustainable and predicts further declines in demand for niche skills as companies analyze return on investment.

### Source excerpt

As I watch the news and posts roll in each day with new layoffs in the valley, ranging from large corporations such as HP and EA, down to the small guys such as seesmic, imeem, searchme, and zillow to name only a few, there still seems to be a demand for certain job skills. While as I look down the list some of these I dont feel are any longer demanded skills, and others will soon be there. In part I want to call attention to facebook first. While everyone and their brother, when launching a website wants to build a facebook app to deliver some of their content on to facebook, the time and effort put into this is no where near the return. The market has become so flooded the penetration you will get is quite trivial. Futhermore cpm's have already plummeted for advertising on facebook, ranging in some cases around .10-.15. Meanwhile iphone developers are still rushing to get their idea into the app store. While a decent idea, and I more than support new applications, so that I can use them on my phone, a 10 million person marketplace is still extremely small, especially if you're not a mainstream application. It used to be that one million users on your website was the golden point in social networks when you could really go for significant funding, or you could start talking a selling price. But thats not the case anymore, much less to reach that on the iphone you would have to be somewhere between the top 10 and top 25 elite apps. So sure, you might not have that many users that download your app right? But theres ad revenue possibilities. Well that works right now, the iphone is seeing insane cpm's in some cases as high as $50. This is simply not sustainable. While some claim that mobile advertising is the holy grail of ad's, that only works if you can capture user intent, which in contrast isn't so simple. It works for search, because well when I'm searching for something that usually captures my intent, not so for when I'm using my phone. I strongly suspect that
