The discussion reaffirmed the distinct roles of each organization within the Ceph ecosystem. The CSC continues to provide technical governance for the project, while the Ceph Foundation focuses on community growth, events, outreach, and funding. The Linux Foundation provides operational, legal, and financial support that enables both groups to operate effectively. A significant area of focus was improving coordination between technical priorities and Foundation-supported programs. Current documentation initiatives include improvements to the documentation backport process, development of a new OSD operations guide, clarification of package and container documentation, and the removal of outdated content. The Board and CSC also discussed the future of community events and the importance of establishing clear goals and success metrics for Foundation-funded programs. To enhance transparency as our community evolves, this newsletter offers a look behind the scenes at these foundational details. Our aim is to update Ceph Community members on the latest developments within the Foundation and to clarify how they can contribute to our ongoing growth. There are several ways to get involved with the foundation. If you have a concept for a Ceph-related project, we encourage you to take the first step toward bringing your idea to the next level and submit a funding request whenever you are ready. ### AI overview

Part 2 of a three-part checklist for turning internal Swift packages into polished public repositories. It focuses on community and lifecycle practices, including contribution paths, simple pull request and issue templates, and contributor guidance.

### Source excerpt

In Part 1, we built the foundation: documentation, tests, automated quality checks. Your Swift package is technically solid. The code works, it's well-documented, and it maintains consistent quality. Now comes the shift: from "my code works" to "others can contribute." Photo by Luca Bravo on UnsplashThis series is for Swift developers turning internal packages into polished public repositories. Part 1 covered documentation and quality. This part focuses on community and lifecycle. This is where many solo-developed projects stumble. The code is great, but there's no clear path for contributions. Issues pile up without organization. Releases happen chaotically. The infrastructure that worked for solo development doesn't scale to community development. The gap isn't technical -- it's process. You need infrastructure for guiding contributions, managing work, communicating changes, and shipping professional releases. The first time someone outside your organization contributes to your project is special. They took time to understand your code, fix something, and send it back. Make their experience smooth. A clear contribution path, simple templates, and responsive feedback turn one-time contributors into regular contributors. The infrastructure we're building isn't bureaucracy -- it's hospitality. It shows contributors that you value their time and want to make contributing easy.PR and Issue Templates: Keep Them Simple Here's my philosophy on templates: they should be easy and optional. PR templates with fifteen sections and required checkboxes don't increase quality -- they discourage contributions. Three sections are enough. I learned this watching pull requests to my own projects. Early on, I created comprehensive templates with sections for "Testing Strategy," "Performance Implications," "Breaking Changes," "Documentation Updates," and more. Nobody filled them out completely. Contributors would either skip most sections or write "N/A" repeatedly, which helped nobody. No

A guide to participating in Hacktoberfest 2025, covering registration, contribution requirements, rewards, code contributions, and ways maintainers can prepare open-source projects.

### Source excerpt

Hacktoberfest 2025: How to Participate Hacktoberfest registrations are live, and we're just a few days away from kicking off the month-long celebration of open source. Every October, developers from all over the world come together to contribute their skills, big and small, to open-source projects. Code is the most common way people participate, but that's not the only way you can help. Open source thrives on more than just commits. It needs documentation, testing, design, writing, and so much more. Before we get into the how, let's cover the basics. First, the rules of Hacktoberfest: Register anytime before October 31. Contribute to projects on GitHub or GitLab that have the hacktoberfest topic. Submit at least 6 high-quality pull/merge requests between October 1 and October 31. These need to be accepted by project maintainers to count. Rewards: Everyone who signs up and gets at least one PR merged, gets a digital badge from Holopin (you can get up to 4 badges). If you're among the first 10,000 people to complete 6 merged PRs/MRs, you'll also get a limited edition Hactoberfest 2025 t-shirt. That's it! You're ready to dive in. Ways to contribute: 1. Code Contributions This is what the majority of Hacktoberfest contributions consist of. Most participants jump in by submitting code to projects they care about. Maintainers, many of whom run projects purely out of passion, appreciate thoughtful, quality code more than anything. Whether this is your 12th Hacktoberfest or your very first pull request, now's the time to fire up GitHub or GitLab and get started. Helpful resources: Introduction to GitHub and Open-Source Projects How to use Git 5 things for your first time contributing 2. Maintaining a project Hacktoberfest isn't only for contributors. It's for maintainers too. If you've got a project idea that could help the community, you can launch it now and take part as a maintainer. If you're already maintaining an open-source project, here's how to prepare it for Hackt
