### AI overview

An AI-generated conversation considers how AI may change product design, shifting designers toward directing, framing, and curating intelligent systems while raising concerns about the possible loss of hands-on craft and attention to detail.

### Source excerpt

We are the things that others fear. Now, I know you were all hoping for a detailed monologue on the 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, or perhaps the new Netflix series. (I haven't seen it.) Sadly, this isn't that. It's something else. I fed my previous articles and thoughts on AI and product design into AI and asked for their take on the future of product design. Below is part of a transcript of our conversation. You can decide whether it's a genius, a parasite, or it just wants me to feel like I'm not replaceable. Me: OK, let's start with the big one. How do you see the role of a product designer changing in a world with AI? AI: Well, it's a fascinating question, and the shift may be less about the tools and more about the designer's entire mindset. Previously, designers were makers who created static blueprints for a fixed journey. Now, the role is more like a creative director or a coach for an intelligent system. Instead of creating every option yourself, your job is to provide the AI with the right direction, context, and constraints -- teaching it your taste and shaping its character. This moves the focus from pixel-perfect execution to the quality of the prompt and framing the problem. The skill becomes asking the right questions and curating the output to find the magic within the noise. You hold the vision, but now you have a new, incredibly powerful, and very literal-minded creative partner to help you explore it. Me: OK! First, love the phrase 'coach for an intelligent system' -- nicely done. Two things here, aren't the best Product Designers already working this way? We already know, it isn't about a series of individual moments or a fixed experience. Also, are we in danger of removing an essential part of a designer's DNA? We are the details folk, famed for our bad spelling, but we can spot a misaligned pixel from 100 meters away through a crowded room. Are we in danger of losing part of our craft? AI: Those are two excellent and very fair poin

### AI overview

This commentary examines how generative AI tools may affect the creative industry. It discusses rapid adoption of tools such as ChatGPT, Sora, DALL-E, Copilot and Midjourney, along with concerns about productivity, creative work and job displacement.

### Source excerpt

A look into the potential impact of generative AI tools in the creative industry Video Killed the Radio Star The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" highlights some concerns regarding the rise of technology within the creative industry. Released back in 1979, the hit ironically proceeded to become MTV's first music video. The lyrics "rewritten by machine on new technology" still ring true to this day, and it's an undeniable fact that will continue to persist as long as there's room to innovate. Forty-five years later, we're witnessing the dawn of a new way of manifesting an idea. It's naturally causing some fear, but what's actually there to be scared of? Computer God Countless generative AI (GenAI) tools have become available for public consumption over the last few years. ChatGPT racked up over 100 million users just two months after its launch in November 2022. To put things into perspective, it took 9 months for TikTok to get the same amount of active users, while it took Instagram two years to get as many active users. OpenAI has released two other tools - Sora and DALL-E - that admittedly have been equally impressive. In partnership with GitHub, OpenAI also boasts CoPilot, which is favoured by a few people in the team. Midjourney and Google have also produced programs that make use of large language models (LLMs). We've undoubtedly entered an AI Boom, and this phenomenon recently inspired an "AI arms race" in Silicon Valley where tech giants shifted their strategies to invest, improve and integrate these tools into their existing software. On paper, these applications increase productivity as they allow a rapid production of ideas, but creative professionals can't help but feel concerned about the future of their industry with every word that can now be transformed into a solution in just a matter of seconds. Paranoid Android In The Futur's "The Future of AI in the Creative Industry", Motion's Kevin Lau discusses the impact and the future of the creative in

We've been working on apps like TextSecure and RedPhone (which provide secure text messages and secure phone calls) for years now, because we believe that it's possible to develop well-designed secure communication tools that are both privacy-preserving and a joy to use. This winter, we'd like to invite you to join us for "Winter Break Of Code," a week-long free trip to Kauai for anyone who'd like to spend a week working on this type of easy-to-use privacy-enhancing technology in a collaborative environment. We've rented a large beachfront house on the north coast of Kauai for everyone to stay in, and we'll pay for your airfare. While there, you can split your time between island living and working on an Open Whisper Systems-related privacy project that you propose. Read more...

SoundCloud and Acapela Group announce a developer contest inviting participants to combine SoundCloud's audio platform with Acapela's text-to-speech services and SDKs. Developers can create creative and accessible apps, with submissions due May 15th and prizes offered to the top three entries.

### Source excerpt

SoundCloud is teaming up with Acapela Group for our first Developer Contest. Acapela Group offers amazing text to speech solutions and have a variety of SDKs so you can write apps that create sound files using one of their voices (including hip-hop and country!). Take a listen to some sample voices. We're calling on our developer community to mashup SoundCloud and Acapela. Show us what you can do using a text to speech service with the best audio content platform on the web. Maybe you want to have your email read (or sung!) to you layered on some instrumental or drum tracks. We think there are loads of options for making interesting and accessible apps using these two services.
