Alternatively, use brew: brew install --cask kaushikgopal/tools/font-moxy People understandably love and swear by JetBrains Mono. They keep asking why I don't cite or bring it up. I love that JetBrains Mono exists, but I find it a "drab" font -- and that's not always a bad thing. When you look at Recursive, it makes a statement. ↩︎

To accompany this post, we've also published the source code of the Swift TrueType hinting interpreter. We hope sharing our experience helps others doing similar work in Swift. TrueType and the hinting engine Apple developed TrueType in the late 1980s and released it with the launch of System 7 in 1991. TrueType was a major breakthrough for the time: it gave font developers enormous control over how glyphs are displayed, with an advanced grid-fitting algorithm and a sophisticated hinting engine built around a special-purpose bytecode interpreter. TrueType did all this on computers that were vastly less powerful than today's, so it had to be extremely well-tuned for performance. Then the internet revolutionized how fonts were used. TrueType became embeddable in PDF files in 1994 and in web pages in 2008, and it remains as relevant as ever. However, these new use cases brought additional risk: TrueType could now be exposed to untrusted fonts from anywhere on the internet. I typically do the above on my desktop and sync settings to my mobile. But nothing stops you from doing it directly on your mobile (if you don't have sync enabled). I now have my favorite reading font applied across my notes on mobile and my favorite monospace one applied to all the code in them! Obsidian on Android with custom fonts I encoded a variable font for convenience so i didn't have to declare italicized, bolded, etc. versions of the font. ↩︎

If your font doesn't have these to begin with, this approach will not work. As an example, IBM Plex Mono's full otf can be downloaded here. Step 2: identify the alternative character sets you want ## Upload your font to wakamaifondue.com. You'll get a neat summary of your font and all the available features variants. Step 3: use pyftfeatfreeze ## pyftfeatfreeze is a fantastic open source tool that allows you to create a new version of your font with the specific set of alternative characters chosen. Here's the entire set of commands I used to generate my variant of IBM Plex Mono: #!/bin/zsh fontSuffix="KG" # create a new directory for your font mkdir -p "IBM-Plex-Mono-$fontSuffix" # change to directory that has original otf font cd IBM-Plex-Mono # install the tool pipx install opentype-feature-freezer # Pick the right combination of stylistic characters # By default IBM Plex Mono ships: # Regular - styled g; styled a (with caps) # Italic - plain g ; plain a (without cap) # I prefer keeping it all consistent # so I change my italic fonts to also have the styled versions of g/a # In the non-italic versions of IBM Plex Mono, change # ss03 - slashed 0 for f in $(fd -HI ibmple
