A personal review of 2023 covering the author's accomplishments, including second place in the WWCode App Deploy hackathon, completion of the Women Developer Academy, organizing an Android study group, podcast appearances, and speaking engagements.

### Source excerpt

Another year, another Year in Review blog post! When I started listing things from 2023, I realized a lot had happened. And I probably don't even remember everything. I've written similar posts before, and you can find them from: Year in Review - 2021 Edition Year in Review - 2022 Edition Accomplishments There are so many things I've accomplished this year. One of them is surviving through the year. It has been one of the most challenging years so far. But more about that later. My latest accomplishment was winning 2nd place in the WWCode App Deploy hackathon. I was so proud of the app, and even more proud when I got the letter that they selected my app as second best. If you want to know more about the app, I wrote a blog post: How My App Won the 2nd Place in the WWCode App Deploy Hackathon. Another thing I want to mention was completing the Women Developer Academy in October. I'm so happy about meeting all the people and getting to know them. I also can't wait for all the future conferences and other events where we'll meet in person! I wrote a blog post about my experiences: Women Developer Academy Europe 2023 - My Experience During the fall, we organized a study group for learning Android with my colleague at Oura. It was for a Finnish organization called Mimmit Koodaa (Women Code would be the literal translation), and we got a great group of Android newbies joining us throughout the months. Even though fall turned out to be full of events and other things, I'm happy that we got to organize this study group. Another notable thing is that I was a guest on two podcasts: Tech Talks with Madona and Women Who Code podcast. It was so fun to record both of them! I recommend checking both podcasts out (not just the episodes I'm in); there are so many gems in the episodes. Finally, I'm Dev Top Author for the second year in a row! Dev has always been a dear community to me, as it has been so welcoming and inclusive, so this is an honor. Speaking In 2023, I did more in-per

A personal account of participating in Google's Women Developer Academy Europe 2023. The article describes the program's goals, weekly sessions on public speaking and conference applications, mentoring, and an I Am Remarkable workshop.

### Source excerpt

My October was busy. I spoke at three conferences (droidcon Italy, droidcon London, and KKON, which was an online conference). I had also applied to the Women Developer Academy Europe earlier, and when the acceptance letter arrived at the end of September, I wasn't sure if I could participate. But as you might guess from me writing this blog post, I decided to attend, and it was a great decision! In this blog post, I'll share my experiences with the program. Women Developer Academy (WDA) Women Developer Academy is a program from Google, and the event page for our cohort (Women Developer Academy Europe) explains it in a nutshell: The Women Developer Academy is a specialized program for female developers, aimed at increasing the diversity of speakers at tech events in the region, focusing on creating an inclusive community of speakers and mentors who can support each other. The program consisted of weekly sessions, the I Am Remarkable workshop, mentoring, and a mini-conference with 5-minute talks. I'll share a bit more about them next. Sessions The program had 2-3 evening sessions each week. The topics for the meetings were about public speaking, applying to conferences, online branding, and many other related topics. Many of those topics were familiar, as I've spoken at many conferences, but I also learned new things. For me, living in the eastern side of Europe in Finland, these meetings started at seven in the evening. It's not an optimal time for someone who is definitely a morning person, and needs their wind-down time in the evening. But I was so happy that we got the sessions as recordings and could watch them later! I Am Remarkable-workshop The WDA program included a I Am Remarkable workshop. The website describes the movement behind this workshop: #IAmRemarkable is a global movement that empowers everyone to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. I've heard of this workshop but never got to attend one. I can see the need for such workshops

I have a friend, in the Chicago area, who calls me up two or three times a year to ask me to give a talk at a User Group, or a conference he's involved with, or something like that. If my schedule is free I always say yes. I don't charge anything because I enjoy supporting the Chicago software community, and it's never a bad thing to get my face out in front of new people. I am a consultant, after all, and giving pro-bono talks is one of the ways I promote myself. Anyway, he wrote to me last October (That's right, a full year ago!) and asked me to give a presentation at a Chicago conference this September 21st. I agreed, and he thanked me, and that was that. Then, in June, he wrote to tell me that the conference was going to be virtual due to Covid. I acknowledged and, once again, that was that. Last Wednesday, September 9th, twelve days before the conference, he called me on the phone and said: "This is going to be the most uncomfortable phone call I have ever made." He went on to say that the "Code of Conduct" people at the conference were concerened about some of my political opinions, and that some of the speakers of the conference refused to speak if I was going to speak. Like I said, this guy is a friend of mine, and I don't want to get him into any trouble, so I decided not to raise a fuss about it, and I promised him I would not mention his name or the name of the conference on line. He responded by telling me: I'm scared to death of these people. Over the last few days I've been mulling this situation over in my mind, and I've come to a few interesting conclusions. The conference organizers are in breach of contract. OK, we didn't have a formal written contract, but we had emails. And we also had the fact that, for the better part of a year, the conference website had my picture on it, and advertised me as a speaker. I conclude that the conference organizers derived substantial benefit from those pictures and from promising my virtual presence to their audi
