### AI overview

Chrome has introduced four experimental metrics to the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) that quantify website ad load: ad count, ad density, network weight, and CPU weight. The aggregated data is public and can be accessed through CrUX Vis, APIs, and Chrome DevTools, although availability and evaluation thresholds remain limited.

### Source excerpt

Chrome can now measure exactly how obnoxious a website's ads are, from how much of your screen they swallow to how much data and CPU time they burn. Those ad-stuffed websites can finally be measured, and the results are public.

### Source excerpt

Which apps do you use throughout your day? Maybe you manage your projects on Trello, use Notion as an internal docs site, and maybe, just maybe, you do some swiping on Tinder during your lunch break. Despite looking nothing alike, these three highly successful apps are organized around the same idea: Give users a small number of meaningful objects, let them act on those objects directly, and the interface will feel intuitive without explanation.Cards. Blocks. Profiles: These UI components are the central concepts around which Trello, Notion, and Tinder organize everything else. We can call them objects. Users recognize them immediately, know what they can do with them, and build their entire...

The video explains object-oriented UI design through an airline reservation example. It argues that users think in terms of meaningful objects, such as reservations, rather than isolated features and screens, and introduces conceptual models as a way to structure interfaces around those objects.

### Source excerpt

Vacation time! You book your flight. You have a reservation. It's real. You paid for it. And yet, when you open the airline's app to look at it, it's surprisingly elusive. You don't want to check in, you don't want to change it, you just want to find it and check the details. It's not on the home screen. The home screen wants to sell you another flight. You try your profile. Only personal details. You try "My Trips." There it is! Except "My Trips" only shows the flight. Your seat is somewhere else. Your meal preference is somewhere else. Your upgrade option is somewhere else. The one thing that should hold all of this together, your reservation, has been chopped into pieces and scattered acr...

McDonald's describes how its teams redesigned the Rewards experience as a loyalty platform rather than a simple rewards list. The work focused on reducing friction, improving personalization, and integrating rewards into the mobile ordering journey. By September 2026, the redesigned experience was live across the company's lead Global Mobile App markets.

### Source excerpt

From simpler experiences to smarter systems, this is how loyalty evolves at global scale. by Sara Robertson, Sr. Manager, Product Management Quick Bytes Loyalty operates at massive scale, but customer research showed that finding, understanding, and using rewards didn't always feel easy in the moments that mattered most By rethinking loyalty as a platform -- not just a rewards list -- teams reduced friction, introduced scalable personalization, and embedded value directly into the ordering journey The result is a simpler, more intuitive loyalty experience designed to grow with customers and support long-term global scale Loyalty at McDonald's operates at a scale few brands have ever achieved. Every day, millions of customers engage with McDonald's Rewards -- each with their own habits, preferences, and expectations. As the program grows, so does our ambition: deliver a loyalty experience that feels effortless, personal, and genuinely valuable for everyone. That ambition is tied to a clear leadership focus: continuing to grow our global loyalty customer base by making loyalty so intuitive, flexible, and valuable that it becomes a natural part of how customers use the app. As McDonald's continues its journey to build one of the world's leading loyalty programs, simplicity and customer value remain at the center of every decision. That's why teams across Product, Engineering, and Experience Design -- together with cross-functional partners across the Global team, segments, and markets -- collaborated to reimagine the loyalty experience. As of September 2026, the experience is now live across all of our lead Global Mobile App (GMA) markets. Designing for growth starts with reducing friction Customer research made one thing clear early on: loyalty was valuable, but engaging with it didn't always feel easy. Customers told us rewards could be hard to find, confusing to understand, or disconnected from the actual moment they were ordering food. Too often, rewards were remembered

A survey of LibreOffice Base users highlights requests for a cleaner interface, more capable or simpler workflows, stronger search, bug fixes, stability, performance, and improvements to queries, forms, and reports.

### Source excerpt

Heiko Tietze has published a blog post summarizing the results of a recent survey about the use of LibreOffice's database application, Base. 455 people participated in the survey, including more than 330 who use Base on Linux, with use cases ranging from maintaining records of personal media such as CDs or DVDs to use enterprise-resource planning (ERP) and finance. Of course, users had many ideas how to improve the application: The majority asks for improvements to the user interface with less clutter and a more attractive design. The workflow and user experience should become either simplified or more powerful, depending on the expertise and the scenario. For example, an elaborate search function is something that many people expect. [...] Almost the same number of answers requests bug fixes, improvements to stability, and better performance. Issues with queries, forms, and reports were mentioned equally often. In this regard, many replies suggest to remove the Java dependencies.

### AI overview

The article presents progressive authentication for RAG systems: answer public questions without sign-in, then authenticate within the conversation when a request requires access to sensitive personal data. It argues that static, upfront authentication does not fit conversations that shift between public and private contexts.

### Source excerpt

Designing a production-ready RAG architecture where authentication becomes part of the conversation, not a prerequisite for it. By Aishwarya Murali Padikkal & Priyank Solanki From understanding to retrieval, grounding, and response, authentication enters only when the conversation requires access to sensitive data- illustrating the core idea of progressive authentication. Illustration generated using ChatGPT and refined by the authors. Two questions, one help line Imagine two taxpayers opening the same AI-powered tax assistant. The first asks, "When is the filing deadline this year?" The second asks, "What was my refund last year?" Both questions are valid. Both deserve fast, helpful answers. Yet they represent fundamentally different types of requests. Figure 1. The same assistant, two different journeys. Requests are routed according to the type of information being accessed. Illustration generated by AI (ChatGPT) and refined by the authors. The answer to the first lives in a public handbook. Anyone should be able to access it instantly- no sign-in, no friction. The answer to the second is within an individual's private tax records. Before revealing a single detail, the assistant must be certain it is interacting with the right person. Making public information instantly accessible while ensuring private information is revealed only to the right person, all within the same conversation, is the challenge we set out to solve. It is also where conventional RAG systems quietly fall apart. Traditional RAG architectures assume a much simpler interaction model: a user asks a question, the system retrieves relevant documents, and the model generates an answer. Authentication, if it exists at all, is treated as a one-time checkpoint at the start of the interaction. Real conversations are far less predictable. Users naturally shift contexts, starting with a public question, moving to a personal one, and then asking follow-up questions that rely on both. The conversation evo

### AI overview

This article presents four questions for evaluating tasks before delegating them to an AI agent: assess how reversible mistakes are, avoid sensitive areas such as money, health, and identity, distinguish simple completion from empathetic interaction, and provide sufficient context. It recommends hybrid workflows in which AI gathers data while humans make critical decisions, and prioritizing tasks by error cost rather than ticket volume.

This final report describes a Google Summer of Code 2026 project that expanded Haiku's Devices application from a basic hardware list into a more capable management utility. The work added driver mapping, USB and HID descriptor inspection, packaged-driver blocking with safety checks, unit tests, alphabetical sorting, improved attribute organization, and persistent selection.

### Source excerpt

Hello everyone! As Google Summer of Code 2026 comes to a close, it's time to summarize the work I've done over the summer on expanding the functionality of the Haiku Devices application. Overview Haiku's Devices application previously provided a basic list of connected hardware, but lacked the features necessary to function as a true management utility. My project aimed to transform Devices into a more capable hardware manager, allowing users to view detailed technical specifications and perform administrative tasks directly from the GUI. Over the course of the summer, I focused on implementing new visualization features, improving the user experience, and pulling more detailed hardware information directly from the system. Completed Objectives & Work Accomplished Here is a breakdown of what was accomplished this summer: Driver Mapping: Integrated the GUI with the kernel structures to display the active driver module name and its absolute path (/dev). This involved extending the device_manager module by adding a new device attribute and being able to fill that attribute when possible. Extract USB descriptors: Enhanced the application's ability to inspect USB devices. By utilizing the BUSBDevice API, the app now builds a tree with all USB attributes descending the USB hierarchy. We first loop through the configurations, then the interfaces, and finally the endpoints. The app can also display HID descriptors. State Management (Packaged Driver Blocking): Added a new GUI button to disable or re-enable packaged drivers. This required implementing the backend logic to read, modify, and write to the system's Packages configuration file. I also added safety checks to prevent users from accidentally disabling drivers essential to the system, and added warnings to guide the user through the process. Unit Tests: Although not explicitly part of my initial proposal, I took the initiative to write unit tests for the application. This was a fantastic learning experience for unders

This is why memory optimization is more critical than ever. Across the ecosystem, new devices are maintaining or even decreasing their physical memory capacity in response to memory price increases, yet users continue to expect the same seamless, high-performance app experience. In Android 17, we introduced per-app memory limits, starting with Pixel devices, to help protect the overall user experience from applications using excess memory and causing system-wide slowdowns. Over the coming year, an increasing number of manufacturers will leverage the Android per-app memory limits across their portfolio of device RAM configurations from 4GB to 16GB+ devices. If your app exceeds these limits, it will be slowed down and may be terminated. Optimizing your app's memory footprint is essential to preventing OS throttling and maintaining a seamless user experience. In this post, we'll explore how these limits work under the hood, how to measure your memory footprint using new Android vitals metrics, and actionable steps to optimize your app or game. Understanding Memory Limits When your app exceeds its memory budget, Android takes progressive action to protect device responsiveness: zRAM Swapping: If your app reaches its allocated limit, the system forces your app's pages into zRAM (compressed RAM). While zRAM prevents immediate eviction, compressing and decompressing pages adds CPU overhead, which can result in noticeable UI jank and experience slowdowns. Process Termination: If your app continues to increase its memory usage beyond the zRAM threshold, it will be terminated by the system. To determine if your app session was impacted by these constraints in the field, you can call getDescription() within ApplicationExitInfo. If the system applied a limit, the
