A tutorial on integrating Android AppFunctions into a travel-planning app so a privileged on-device agent can perform tasks such as expense tracking and itinerary queries through voice or text commands.

Posted by Ben Weiss, Senior Developer Relations Engineer, Android Developer Relations Welcome back to the blog post series "Build intelligent Android apps" where we take a basic Android app and transform it into a personalized, intelligent, and agentic experience. In our previous post, we explored how to leverage Firebase AI Logic to build cloud-hosted and hybrid AI features. Traditional mobile UIs excel at focused, hands-on tasks, and the Android intelligence system is introducing complementary features to make complex, multi-step actions even easier. By supplementing traditional user interfaces, AppFunctions provide a powerful new entry point: A privileged agent on the device can access app features in the background. This can be particularly helpful when users are driving, walking or otherwise multitasking. In this article, we'll show you how we designed and integrated these capabilities into our travel planning app, JetPacker, using Android AppFunctions. We'll explore the rationale behind our feature choices, discuss the specialized tooling we used to accelerate development, and dive into the code that makes it all work. Designing AI-ready features: making choices that matter for your users To select which features to provide to the intelligence system, we looked for tasks where a voice or text command is objectively faster than tapping through screens. In this side-by-side screen recording you can see this contrast perfectly: on the left, a user tapping through multiple screens to log an expense; on the right, the same task completed instantly in the background via a privileged agent. Our first choice was expense tracking. Logging a coffee expense during a trip usually takes quite a few taps--unlocking the phone, opening the app, finding the active trip, navigating to the expenses tab, tapping the add button, taking a picture of the receipt, and checking the result. By providing the addExpense and getExpenses features as AppFunctions, the system agent handles th

There's a moment in almost every usability session where a participant pauses at the login screen, types something, and glances up: checking whether they're "doing it right." That pause is a clear sign. They've already clocked that this isn't a real app, and every data point collected after that moment is filtered through that awareness.

### AI overview

postmarketOS v24.12 is a Linux mobile release focused on stability, automated testing, camera support, and updated mobile user interfaces. The Pixel 3A and Fairphone 5 have working front and rear cameras, while one rear camera works on the Pocophone F1. The release uses Alpine Linux 3.21 and updates GNOME Shell on Mobile, KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, and Sxmo.

### Source excerpt

This release is geared mainly towards Linux enthusiasts. We are working hard on stability improvements and automated testing, but if you expect Android or iOS levels of polish, then this is not for you yet. Systemd is coming in the next one. Introduction One thing that people have been asking us over and over is, will it be possible to use cameras with postmarketOS on Androids? While of course we all would like to see that, this is a significant challenge for postmarketOS and other Linux Mobile projects that prefer using the mainline Linux kernel and don't use the proprietary Android userspace blobs for interacting with cameras. But as you can guess from the headline, there has been a significant breakthrough: the Pixel 3A and Fairphone 5 both have front and a rear camera working now, and somebody even reported being able to record video on the FP5. One of the two rear cameras of the Pocophone F1 also works now. As you would expect, this is not on-par with Android's implementation yet and some of the media has a bit of a retro appeal at the moment. Nevertheless, this is a major achievement! Thanks to Robert M., Richard Ac., Luca, Joel, Alistair as well as the libcamera and Megapixels folks! Software Stack As always we target the most recent Alpine release. In case of v24.12 it is the excellent Alpine Linux 3.21. User Interfaces (UIs) Mobile UI Versions GNOME Shell on Mobile 46-mobile.1 replaces 45_git20240610 from v24.06. Besides the rebase on Gnome Shell 46, this has several visual, keyboard and inhibit/suspend related improvements. Thanks to Jonas and all the GNOME contributors! KDE Plasma Mobile 6.2.4 replaces version 6.0.5 from v24.06. A notable improvement is the new dialer with "17 months of bug fixing as well as small improvements all over the place". Thanks to Devin and all the KDE contributors! Phosh 0.43.1 replaces version 0.39.0 from v24.06. Among other great improvements, Phosh now supports accent colors as you can see in the header image. Thanks to Guid

Figma describes the infrastructure behind its AI-powered search features for designs and published components. The system uses embeddings to support text-based and visual search across large collections of files and components, while addressing the cost of generating and indexing billions of embeddings. Figma says its embedding models were not trained on private Figma files or customer data; fine-tuning used images of user interfaces from public Community files.

### AI overview

This article explains why binary or "other" gender choices can exclude users, discusses gender and sex as distinct concepts, and demonstrates how to build a more inclusive gender selection for app settings with Jetpack Compose.

### Source excerpt

If your gender matches the one that was assigned to you at birth, you probably don't notice flaws in application design that enforce the gender binary. But if it doesn't, and especially if your gender is beyond the woman-man binary, you constantly notice user interfaces that exclude you. For example, what should you select if you aren't a man or a woman, and those are the only options in a form? In some cases, forms might include the option "other". But... It underlines that you're something other and don't even have a category. As someone who has felt their entire life like an outsider and the other in many ways, I can tell you that it doesn't do good things to your mental health. So, in this blog post, I'll discuss the concept of gender a bit and then demonstrate one way to build a more inclusive gender selection with Jetpack Compose. Finally, at the end, I'll list some resources related to this topic. Gender Beyond the Binary Let's start with the basics: Gender and sex are separate things. In some languages, like Finnish, the word for both is the same - "sukupuoli" - but, for example, English differentiates them. And neither of them is binary. Gender is a social construct, and each culture has its own norms for genders. There are multiple genders, and a person might describe themself with one or more. Some examples include woman, man, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, demigender (e.g., demigirl or demiboy), or genderfluid. If you want to learn more, I've listed some resources in the Resources-section. Asking User's Gender Gender is asked in many locations - it might be surveys, settings for an app, and many other places. I'll concentrate on app development as I write about app development, and the specific case of app settings because that's where I've seen this gender selection pop up the most frequently. Before diving into the technical implementation of more inclusive gender options, I want to discuss whether there is a need for gender data and making the sele
