An interview with Jochen Sprickerhof, a freelance programmer and Reproducible Builds core team member, covering his work on Debian, F-Droid, software projects, and bit-for-bit reproduction of Debian packages.

### Source excerpt

The Reproducible Builds project relies on several projects, supporters and sponsors for financial support, but they are also valued as ambassadors who spread the word about our project and the work that we do. This is the ninth installment in a series featuring the projects, companies and individuals who support the Reproducible Builds project. We started this series by featuring the Civil Infrastructure Platform project, and followed this up with a post about the Ford Foundation as well as recent ones about ARDC, the Google Open Source Security Team (GOSST), Bootstrappable Builds, the F-Droid project, David A. Wheeler, Simon Butler and Kees Cook. Today, however, we will be talking with Jochen Sprickerhof, one of the newer members of the Reproducible Builds project core team. Vagrant Cascadian: Could you tell me a bit about yourself? What sort of things do you work on? Jochen Sprickerhof: I am a freelance programmer working on Open Source. Mainly doing Debian, F-Droid and some smaller software projects. In general I made it a habit to look into every software I use and try to fix bugs or add features I need. In Debian, I maintain about 180 packages with topics covering home banking, build systems and robotics. Most of my time, I currently work on reproduce.debian.net, where we try to bit-for-bit reproduce the packages distributed by Debian. Vagrant: Could you describe the path that lead you to working on reproducible builds? Jochen: I started my Debian journey as a teenager, converting my school to Debian and serving as its system administrator for 13 years. After studying Applied System Science, I joined the university's robotics labs, where I worked on the Robot Operating System (ROS) and the Point Cloud Library (PCL). In the end, I enjoyed programming more than writing papers, so I eventually left academia for a robotics startup. Some years ago, I realized that the open source work I was doing in my spare time was actually the work I cared most about. Nowadays I

What is it like to be a Debian Project Leader (DPL), or a former one? According to Andreas Tille, who stepped down this year after two consecutive terms as DPL, you'd have to be one to know. At the recent MiniDebConf in Winterthur, Switzerland, Tille spoke about what he learned while serving as DPL, some of the initiatives he led, mistakes that he made, and his thoughts on the general resolution (GR) on large language model (LLM) usage in Debian.

### AI overview

A tutorial explaining how to install Armbian on recent Raspberry Pi boards, including the Raspberry Pi 5. It covers choosing between minimal and desktop editions, selecting Debian- or Ubuntu-based images, flashing the image to an SD card or USB drive, and completing the first-boot setup.

### Source excerpt

I recently installed Armbian on one of my Raspberry Pi boards, and I was surprised by how much it has improved over the years. If you're curious about trying it yourself, I'll walk you through the installation process and help you get started. Armbian can now be installed on all recent Raspberry Pi models, including...

This tutorial explains how to configure Polish full-text search in PostgreSQL. It reports that PostgreSQL 19 is expected to include a Polish dictionary, while current PostgreSQL versions such as PostgreSQL 18 require installing or obtaining Hunspell Polish files, converting them to UTF-8 when necessary, placing them in the PostgreSQL text-search data directory, and configuring and testing the dictionary.

### Source excerpt

Some time ago someone posted on Reddit that they have problems adding Polish configuration to their PostgreSQL. While checking it, I found some interesting news. And of course figured out how to have Polish configuration... First, the news: apparently in PostgreSQL 19, we will automatically get Polish dictionary, thanks to this commit from 5th of ... ### AI overview

A Q1 2026 GNU/Hurd project update reports debugging and fixes across SMP, threading, filesystem, IPC, networking, and related components, along with wiki documentation and hardware-installation guidance.

### Source excerpt

Hello! Welcome to a new qoth. This qoth covers new and interesting GNU/Hurd developments in Q1 of 2026! Details. Brent W. Baccala debugged some x86_64 SMP issues with a Claude AI bot. The bot did not contribute any code. It just found some incorrect code that Damien then fixed. It did get some things wrong, but it was incredibly helpful pointing out several problems. You can read its report here. Joshua Branson tweaked the hurd wiki. The most helpful addition is this page, which documents how to flash a working qemu hurd image directly to an HDD or SSD. This is a really easy way to install the Hurd on real hardware! Buy a supported machine from this page and give it a shot! Consider this another reminder that the Hurd project could use more documentation writers. It's an easy way to contribute. As a fun fact, Joshua wrote this qoth on the Hurd running on a T420 with 12 GB of RAM! Running Debian GNU/Hurd on bare metal these days is largely fairly stable. Emacs, i3, netsurf, and luakit all work just fine and most of the Debian package archive compiles without issue on the Hurd. Etienne Brateau fixed a compilation error. He also provided a simple test program that exposed a rather serious threading bug, which Samuel promptly fixed. This is a good reminder that writing simple C test programs that successfully run on Linux, but fail on the Hurd can have a large impact. Gianluca Cannata worked on our httpfs translator. Diego Nieto Cid added a daemon-wait option for console-client. This can help users with slow machines avoid a broken Hurd console. He also fixed a rumpdisk compilation issue. Mike Kelley fixed a deadlock in SMP enabled GNU Mach kernels. He also fixed a page fault in amd64 SMP kernels. He fixed another deadlock in the alarm () function. He fixed a panic when running large builds without the mach-defpager. He also fixed some of our signal related code. He worked with Samuel to investigate an odd bug. Their detailed investigation uncovered and lead to a fix in
