### AI overview

An opinion article discusses how emojis can improve workplace communication on Slack by conveying tone, empathy, priority, and emotional context that may be missing from digital messages. It also connects effective communication with employee engagement, retention, and trust.

### Source excerpt

If you would like an opportunity to join this emoji-filled, fun environment, you're in luck: we're hiring! 🙌 The benefits of effective communication extend beyond productivity, but also towards increasing employee engagement, retention and trust. In an age where we are more distributed than ever, methods of communication are evolving to ensure we continue to foster connectivity among team members. One such evolution in communication is the use of Emojis in the workplace. A recent survey of 9,400 hybrid workers around the world highlighted that 71% of American workers found emoji-less messages lacking. As a resident emoji "power user" myself, seeing this inspired me to do some reflection around how emojis enhance our culture of communication on Slack here at Doximity . 💡 Clarity Emojis don't take away from the need to clearly and concisely communicate a point. In fact, one might posit that their variety increases the need to be thoughtful and intentional in how we use them with coworkers of all backgrounds, locations and ages. However, they do help fill in the gaps in digital communication introduced by a lack of physical cues. A researcher of body language by the name of Albert Mehrabian first broke down the components of a face-to-face conversation and found that communication is 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal and 7% words only 1 . "I'll try to get to this project by the end of the week 😬" is very different from "I'll try to get to this project by the end of the week 😀". "I loved it 😊" conveys sincerity, while "I loved it 🙄" implies sarcasm. "That's interesting 🤔" illustrates reflection, whereas "That's interesting 🤨" insinuates confusion. Without any emojis, these statements are open to interpretation and, thus, misinterpretation. Additionally, emoji's can help attach a clearer sense of priority or categorization to messages. Sometimes a message is intended to be fyi and other times it may require immediate attention . In an otherwise seemingly endless stream of constan

This is basically that, only instead of dinosaurs, it's emoji, and unlike Ross, I have never successfully befriended a monkey. Last month, my coworker casually told me he still has a 2001 era DoCoMo phone, which is one of the first phones to have emoji (🤓🤓🤓: emoji first appeared in 1999, on DoCoMo phones, and DoCoMo phones alone). So I got ahold of this phone. Which charged, turned on and most importantly, TOTALLY had OG emoji: I spent the whole day being unproductive and sending emoji messages to people: SVGs I then took a 10 hour flight to Europe and, for lack of better things to do while watching every movie that came out this year, I drew every one of those emoji as a sprite. 166 emoji in total, 12x12px each, in one of six colors. This was my first time doing pixels sprites, so I obviously fucked it up: I ended up with a bunch of random sprite sheets, each with a random number of sprites in it, which was a bit of a mess. Thankfully, Amanda Glosson, reigning queen of pixels, wrote me a script to transmogrify my mess into individual svgs. These individual SVGs, to be exact: LOOK HOW PRETTY THEY ARE! 💓 A wild font appears The reason why I made those SVGs was partly because Captain America: Civil War is unbearably boring, but partly because I wanted to make a font and use it everywhere like an emoji hipster. So then I did. I used Fontastic to make the font - it's black and white, because at the time of writing this, colour fonts weren't supported on the web (tbh, even a year later, when colour fonts are supported, I still couldn't tell you how to make on). I also mapped the original emoji glyph to one of the current existing emoji code points, based on this list, because let's be honest, some of them were mysterious. Do you know what 💥 means? It's 💥. And 💦 is 💦. 12 pixels ain't a lot of pixels, friends. Here the 166 emoji as th

You know that scene in The Rock where Nicolas Cage is super dreamy (like he is) and decides his life mission is to look for VX poison gas and save San Francisco (like he would)? That's baaaasically me, if by "look for VX poison gas" you mean "nerd out on emoji", and by "save San Francisco" you mean "and tell everyone about it". I mean, you clicked on this link, what did you think was going to happen? 🍿 How did we get so lucky? An emoji is a coloured glyph. They appeared around 1999 in Japan, where each mobile carrier implemented their own variants, and people were sending them around in text messages. This was a bit of a mess, as you can imagine proprietary formats interacting with other proprietary formats to be, so in 2000 there was a proposal to standardize them. It wasn't until 2009, though, that emoji got specced in Unicode 5.2 #blessed. Spec trivia: each emoji has a design guideline and name, which is a description/suggestion of what the emoji should look like. This is why 💁,for example, often gets in trouble for being labelled as Information Desk Person, but is actually just a sassy lady: it's the implementation of the emoji that doesn't match its original description, not the other way around. If you take sassy lady away from me though, there will be words. My favourite description is Clockwise Rightwards and Leftwards Open Circle Arrows With Circled One Overlay (or 🔂 for short), which shows true dedication to typing. Emoji does not have a plural in Japanese, so stop trying to make emojis happen. 🙀 What is an emoji even Every emoji is represented by a code point (a hexadecimal number, zero-padded up to at least four digits, like U+26C4). Because all JavaScript strings are internally (i.e. in browsers) represented in UTF-16, this means that each code point, in turn, can be represented by one or more 16-bit code unit. Some emoji are boring (or in the basic unicode plane), which means one glyph is represented by one code unit. ☃ for example is U+2603 (you'd wri

A Perl script visualizes SSH public key fingerprints and other colon-separated hexadecimal byte sequences by mapping each byte to a selected Unicode emoji. The article explains the byte-to-emoji mapping and notes that the script could be extended to other hex-formatted sources such as xxd.

Memorizing SSH public key fingerprints can be difficult; they're just long random numbers displayed in base 16. There are some terminal-friendly solutions, like OpenSSH's randomart. But because I use a Unicode terminal, I like to map the individual bytes into characters in the Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs block. This Perl script does just that: @emoji = qw( 🌀 🌂 🌅 🌈 🌙 🌞 🌟 🌠 🌰 🌱 🌲 🌳 🌴 🌵 🌷 🌸 🌹 🌺 🌻 🌼 🌽 🌾 🌿 🍀 🍁 🍂 🍃 🍄 🍅 🍆 🍇 🍈 🍉 🍊 🍋 🍌 🍍 🍎 🍏 🍐 🍑 🍒 🍓 🍔 🍕 🍖 🍗 🍘 🍜 🍝 🍞 🍟 🍠 🍡 🍢 🍣 🍤 🍥 🍦 🍧 🍨 🍩 🍪 🍫 🍬 🍭 🍮 🍯 🍰 🍱 🍲 🍳 🍴 🍵 🍶 🍷 🍸 🍹 🍺 🍻 🍼 🎀 🎁 🎂 🎃 🎄 🎅 🎈 🎉 🎊 🎋 🎌 🎍 🎎 🎏 🎒 🎓 🎠 🎡 🎢 🎣 🎤 🎥 🎦 🎧 🎨 🎩 🎪 🎫 🎬 🎭 🎮 🎯 🎰 🎱 🎲 🎳 🎴 🎵 🎷 🎸 🎹 🎺 🎻 🎽 🎾 🎿 🏀 🏁 🏂 🏃 🏄 🏆 🏇 🏈 🏉 🏊 🐀 🐁 🐂 🐃 🐄 🐅 🐆 🐇 🐈 🐉 🐊 🐋 🐌 🐍 🐎 🐏 🐐 🐑 🐒 🐓 🐔 🐕 🐖 🐗 🐘 🐙 🐚 🐛 🐜 🐝 🐞 🐟 🐠 🐡 🐢 🐣 🐤 🐥 🐦 🐧 🐨 🐩 🐪 🐫 🐬 🐭 🐮 🐯 🐰 🐱 🐲 🐳 🐴 🐵 🐶 🐷 🐸 🐹 🐺 🐻 🐼 🐽 🐾 👀 👂 👃 👄 👅 👆 👇 👈 👉 👊 👋 👌 👍 👎 👏 👐 👑 👒 👓 👔 👕 👖 👗 👘 👙 👚 👛 👜 👝 👞 👟 👠 👡 👢 👣 👤 👥 👦 👧 👨 👩 👪 👮 👯 👺 👻 👼 👽 👾 👿 💀 💁 💂 💃 💄 💅 ); while (<>) { if (/[a-f0-9:]+:[a-f0-9:]+/) { ($b, $m, $a) = ($`, $&, $'); print $b.join(" ", map { $emoji[$_] } map hex, split /:/, $m)." ".$a; } } What's happening here? First we create a 256-element array containing a hand-picked collection of emoji. Naturally, they're all assigned an index from 0x00 to 0xff. Then we'll loop through standard input and look for lines containing colon-separated hex bytes. Each hex value is replaced with an emoji from the array. Here's the output: The script could easily be extended to support output from other hex-formatted sources as well, such as xxd: Some additional methods for visualizing hex dumps and key fingerprints, from the comments section: PGP Strong Set Top 50 Fingerprint Art VizHash GD - a visual hash
