The author describes streaming PC games to home televisions instead of building a second gaming PC. The article covers the Steam Link setup on an Apple TV 4K, including Xbox One controller pairing issues, and begins evaluating 4K performance.

### Source excerpt

I have two 4K TVs at home, one in the bedroom and one in my living room. Both have consoles attached. One has a PS4 Pro and one has a Nintendo Switch and both are great. However, I also have a gaming PC in my office, which is quite powerful compared to any home console Mine is equipped with a RTX 2080 TI GPU, and a 9900K processor, so it can play pretty much any new game at 4K with a solid 60 fps on high settings.

The article presents a remote device sign-in flow for devices with poor text-entry usability, such as Xbox One. A user opens a URL on a phone or laptop, enters a short code shown on the target device, authenticates if necessary, and confirms linking the target device to their account. The target device polls for completion and then obtains an access token.

A method for signing in to a device that doesn't have a keyboard When we were developing our SoundCloud app for Xbox One, something became very obvious during usability testing: signing in with a game controller really sucks. Entering text requires navigating a virtual keyboard to individual letters, numbers, and characters one at a time - such a nightmare! Plus, letters, numbers, and special characters are spread across three screens. The more secure your password is, the worse the experience is. Entering a password with a game controller using an onscreen keyboard

### AI overview

This tutorial explains why Unity developers might port games to Windows and Windows Phone, discussing multi-platform development, the size and variety of the Windows ecosystem, and the build and submission differences between Windows Store apps and Windows Phone apps.

### Source excerpt

This post is part of 3 week series giving current and aspiring game devs the tools, resources, and advice they need to get started building for Windows. Check out the overview of the series to find what you need. For additional resources to build your app check out AppBuilder. If you are an existing Unity developer, please ensure you check out our current offer here where you can get FREE STUFF and a potential for store promotion . Porting your game to Windows Why would you want to do that? Let's start this off asking the most important question. Why? As an Indie game developer myself I fully believe in today's economy, developers should look at building for multiple platforms. There comes a point though where you can feasibly only support so many platforms given your own resources. Windows Phone 8 is the strong third phone platform globally. With that said, Window Phone is currently growing faster than the phone market, and as of the latest figures is beating iPhone sales in 24 countries including India and Mexico, and is #2 in 10+ countries. There are more than 14 million downloads a day of apps on the phone alone. That's nothing to shake a stick at. The Lumia 520 512 MB phone has sold more than any other Android phone - EVER. Again, not too shabby! Windows Store applications run on the Windows 8 platform, not the phone which targets 3000+ different devices from hand held small tablets, larger tablets, laptops of all sizes, and of course desktop systems as well. Some folks new to the platform think this means only tablets, like a Microsoft Surface tablet. That's not the case. Windows 8 runs on many device types as listed above. Every one of them can run a Windows Store app on it. There is an ever so slightly different build and submission process for Windows 8 apps (ie Windows Store apps) than Windows Phone even though they share a lot of the same common features. We just announced Universal apps at our //build conference being the first platform to be able to tak

An opinion article examines Microsoft's requirement that developers publishing games on Xbox Live sign with a publisher, then places that policy in the context of Microsoft's history with Windows gaming, Xbox consoles, and mobile devices. It argues that Microsoft's console diversification contributed to the weakening of its dominance in PC gaming and discusses the relationship between OpenGL adoption and cross-platform compatibility.

### Source excerpt

Deciding whether to write this latest entry was a tad difficult, if only because I'm starting to feel like I've been harping a bit too much on Microsoft, but some of the information that has trickled out about the new Xbox bears some putting into context. Specifically, the requirement that anyone wanting to publish a game to Xbox Live needs to sign on with a publisher, so no self-publishing by indies.
